We chat with Stéphanie Vandeven, cousin of the sisters Ickroth who created Clove

Clover Lucky Nr4 is our Gin of the Month for the Christmas box, so with Stéphanie Vandeven, cousin of the sisters Ickroth who created the company and sales manager for Clover Gin, we chat about this fantastic new product they launched some weeks ago.

Hello Stéphanie, can you start by telling us a little bit about the history of your company and why you developed a gin?
Gin is a very popular drink in Flanders and we are also passionate about it. This gave us the idea to launch this company. We are real gin lovers. Gin is about the taste but also the marketing. The combination of the packaging, the taste but also the original story behind Clover created attention in the market. Indeed, Nanouck, Charlotte and Ann-Sophie Ickroth (out of Kalmthout) were convinced that their touch of femininity could bring something very innovative even though it was a bit risky to get into a market who appears already saturated. Nowadays, success is growing as it is unusual to see women producing gin.

Why did the 3 sisters decide to produce spirits?
They wanted to venture something together and they had the chance to know someone in the industry who could help them to develop their project. It took them eight months of experimentation to agree on a recipe for Clover. Their first creation (Clover Gin) leaves a floral taste no doubt. In the mouth, and as long as you leave it a a little air, Clover makes notes appear juniper berries, coriander, black pepper, cardamom, and even a hint of lavender, pear and clover.

How is it working with the family (sisters and cousins) ?
It is not always easy as we are all different but is also a major strength for Clover. Every one us is bringing something different, another approach or knowledge. Working together brings us closer to each other too.

What are your main objectives in the future?
It is a good question. Charlotte is following mixology courses and maybe we will launch other products. Nevertheless, nothing is sure yet. We move forward step by step.
Why did you decide to develop a second gin after Clover Gin?
We wanted to develop another variant with another taste and look. Moreover, we wanted to test something different after the Clover Gin success. You can expect other tastes and designs in the future.

What are the main characteristics of Clover Lucky Nr4?
This gin is more “fruity” than the first one and the citrus notes are more pronounced…

Where do you produce the Clover Lucky Nr4?
It is produced by a local distiller in the Antwerpen region.

Why did you call your brand Clover Lucky Nr4?
Clover because it represents 3 leaves, like 3 sisters. The Lucky Nr4 is to welcome myself (their cousin) within the team.

Some interesting bars in Antwerpen?
I would recommend the bar BELROY’S BIJOU, the restaurant DE BROERS VAN JULIENNE and HET GEBAAR.

What is the Clover Lucky Nr4 perfect serve?
5 cl gin et 15cl premium tonic (preferably a neutral Indian tonic) with a grapefruit slice, rosemary and some pink pepper berries.
